About Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

If you’re looking to experience a different side of Belize, check out Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. It was established way back in 1944, and it’s a great example of how Belize is dedicated to preserving its natural beauty. This area stands out from the rest of the country’s lush jungle because it’s covered in Caribbean pine trees, giving it a vibe that almost feels more like North America’s highlands than Central America.

The reserve sits between 1,000 and 3,000 feet above sea level, so the climate stays cool—around 70°F (21°C) year-round, which is a nice change from the usual tropical heat. While it’s gorgeous all year long, the dry season from December to May is your best bet for perfect weather. From NOUR Villas, it’s just a 45-minute drive to the entrance, making it super easy to pop over for a day trip. I’ve been there many times over the years and every visit just feels like a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively!

Rio On Pools

Imagine kicking back in a bunch of natural granite pools, each one flowing into the next like nature’s version of an infinity pool. That’s exactly what you get at the Rio On Pools. These cool, crystal-clear pools were carved out by centuries of water, and they’re perfect for taking a dip or soaking up some sun. If you want the best photos and to skip the crowds, try going in the early morning – trust me, it’s worth it. Oh, and the rocks can be super slippery, so definitely bring water shoes to avoid any wipeouts. I remember the first time I visited, I didn’t bring any, and ended up doing an awkward slip-and-slide across the rocks. Definitely learned my lesson!

Rio Frio Cave

Rio Frio Cave is definitely one of the easiest caves to explore in Belize, making it perfect for first-timers. The entrance is huge—about 65 feet high—and the inside is just as impressive, with a wide open space that feels super welcoming. It’s about a quarter mile long, and there’s a river running through it, which adds a cool touch. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight so you can get a good look at the awesome stalactites and stalagmites hanging around. The best part? The ground is mostly flat and sandy, so you don’t need any fancy gear to check it out. It’s a pretty chill, but definitely memorable, experience!

If you’re up for a short but pretty steep hike, this 150-foot waterfall is definitely worth it. The trail might be a little challenging, but the payoff is huge—the waterfall creates this super refreshing pool that’s perfect for a swim. If you want the best view, stick to the upper trail, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your way down to the pool below. I’ve been there in the morning a couple of times, and it’s awesome to see rainbows in the mist! Some people even jump off the rocks into the water, but only if you’re comfortable with that kind of thrill.

Caracol Archaeological Site

If you’re ever in Belize, you’ve got to check out Caracol. This ancient Maya city is hidden away in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, and it’s pretty amazing.

Caracol was once a major city, and you can still see the impressive ruins, including the giant Caana pyramid—it’s actually the tallest structure in Belize! The site really gives you a sense of how advanced the Maya were, not just in their architecture but in their whole way of life, from urban planning to agriculture. As you walk around, you’ll come across huge plazas, temples, and stone monuments that tell stories about Maya rulers and their rivalries with nearby cities like Tikal in Guatemala. Plus, the drive to get there is an adventure on its own, winding through the beautiful, peaceful forests of Mountain Pine Ridge.

Whether you’re into history or just love exploring nature, Caracol is definitely worth the visit. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
