About our Xunantunich Mayan Ruins experience...
Nestled along the Western Highway, just across the river from San Jose Succotz, Xunantunich—often referred to as the “Maiden of the Rock”—stands as a significant ceremonial hub of the ancient Maya civilization. Accessible daily by a charming ferry ride, this archaeological gem is a mere 1.5 kilometers (about a mile) from the scenic rapids of the Mopan River.
While the main area of the site spans just 300 square meters, its full extent stretches across several square kilometers. The site’s centerpiece, El Castillo, soars 130 feet above the central plaza & ranks among the tallest structures in Belize. Atop El Castillo, you’ll find two notable temples. The lower temple is renowned for its elaborate stucco frieze, featuring a prominent mask with large ears, believed to depict the sun god. Adjacent to this mask is a moon symbol encircled by representations of Venus, adding to the site’s rich tapestry of celestial & cultural significance.
On a clear day, the panoramic views extend into Guatemala & towards Caracol in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, making Xunantunich a truly captivating Maya city to explore.
